The Speakers
H.E. Dr. Andrew Pocock CMG
Dr. Pocock is a career diplomat who joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in 1981. From 1983 to 1986 he was Second Secretary (Commercial)
in Lagos. From 1986 to 1988, he was Head of Section in Southern African Department in the
FCO. From 1988 to 1992, he was First Secretary (Political) in the British Embassy in Washington, D.C.
After returning to London for four years (including one on secondment to the Royal College
of Defence Studies), he was posted to Canberra as Deputy High Commissioner from 1997-2001.
He returned to the FCO as a Head of Department, before serving as High Commissioner in Dar
es Salaam from 2003 to 2006; and as Ambassador in Harare from 2006 to 2009. Dr. Pocock
was Director for Africa in the FCO in 2010, before arriving in Ottawa in January 2011
as High Commissioner.

Alain Paul Martin
Alain is returning to Harvard University as an Advanced Leadership Fellow, starting December 2011. He served in the Board of Harvard University Club of Ottawa (HUCO) for ten years, including two as President and four as President of Harvard Business School Club. He is currently President and CEO of The Professional Development Institute PDI Inc., where he advises clients in North America and abroad and leads R&D and consulting teams focusing on governance, leadership, principled negotiation, strategy, risk and project management. Alain advised the CEO of Desjardins Group on strategy and risk for twelve years, trained nuclear-power executives and senior engineers in advanced risk management for four years, and taught Management of Change at the University of Quebec. He was an Executive Member of the Prime Minister’s Committee on Government Reform. Alain authored the UNESCO assessment report titled “Overhauling the UNESCO and Strengthening Its Essence” and the book “Harnessing the Power of Intelligence, Counterintelligence and Surprise Events”.

Cost for Harvard alums, guests and inter-university alums: $35 (+HST) for the benefit
of Harvard Scholarship Fund. Cost includes a complimentary alcoholic beverage but
excludes optional dinner. Harvard Alums will get a free HUCO membership for 2011-2012.
Attendance is free for HUCO members who paid or renewed their membership
after July 1, 2011. Interuniversity alliance alums (Cambridge, LSE, MIT,
Oxford, and Canadian universities) are
most welcome. Space is limited. For security reasons, only confirmed
participants who registered online will be admitted
at The British High Commission.
IMPORTANT: There is no parking at the Commission. Use the NAC public parking
across Elgin Street or those behind the Commission on Albert Street.
An optional dinner at Chianti Restaurant (160 Metcalfe Street) is planned after the AGM at 8:00 p.m.
The restaurant will provide individual bills for dinner. Please also confirm your attendance
for the optional dinner so that arrangements can be made with Chianti Restaurant.
