 Canada, long used to its role as a major "middle power," now finds itself jostling along-side many others seeking to cement ties with such emerging powerhouses as China, India, Brazil and South Africa. Will we succeed?

David M. Malone, a former Canadian ambassador to the UN and High Commissioner to India, is currently the President of Canada's International Development Research Centre. He is the author of books, including the forthcoming (later this year), Does the Elephant Dance? Contemporary Indian Foreign Policy (Oxford University Press).
